Built by Cambodia's legendary King Jayavarman VII, Bayon rises above the dirt roads between temples with 216 cooling smiling faces of Avalokiteshvra - which strongly resemble Jayavarman himself. A subtle way to show his subjects that the king's eyes are everywhere.

Climbing the steep staircases up to 54 Gothic style towers you're met with the king's benevolent smile from every direction.
